Fong is from Suzhou in the Jiangsu province of China. She was taught to sing by her father, an accomplished singer of Peking Opera. After studying Chinese language and literature at Suzhou University she spent a brief period as an advertisement designer before launching her professional singing career. Receiving wide acclaim in China and India, Fong is now welcomed for the first time in the West.
Fong draws inspiration from her Chinese folk tradition, Peking Opera, Chinese Jazz and modern Chinese pop. During 2004 she spent six months living in the Western Provinces of China perfecting mountain songs.
Singing both solo and accompanied, the rich variety of Chinese culture rings out in Fong’s selection of songs. Contrasting ancient folk with modern pop, Fong’s performance surprises and delights. Her songs are by turns vibrant, vivacious and gentle. She halloos from Mongolian mountain tops, swings with the 1930’s Shanghai jazz scene, banters with Yellow River boatmen, bops with cosmopolitan Beijingers and rocks a babe in a timeless lullaby.
Fong is a unique and special performer with an amazing ability to render and adapt her voice to many singing styles.
