Album: The Flowing Stream-A Tour of China in Song

Fong sings twelve folk songs from ten provinces of China. These melodies have sounded for generations over the grasslands, paddy fields and mountain slopes of her homeland. Their beauty and concentration is as yet little known in the West. Fong sings unaccompanied. Her tone is pure, her songs by turns vibrant, vivacious and gentle. She halloos from mountain tops, banters with river boat-men and rocks a babe to sleep in a timeless lullaby. A knowledge of Chinese literature and of the culture and languages of China’s peoples guides Fong’s choice of songs. They are poems of love, yearning, melancholy and tenderness.

An English translation of each song is provided in the sleeve.
